During a meeting of the Pawtuxet Valley Clergy Association, shortly after the tropical storm of August 2011, a concern was raised about the impact of the weeklong power outage on the most vulnerable members of our churches, the young and the elderly. Born out of that important meeting was the genesis of the Galatians 6:10 Project.
As we are called to bear witness to Jesus Christ, we, the priesthood of believers, seek to live out Galatians 6:10 in our community: "As we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those wo are of the household of faith.
Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you? And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.
In times of mass emergency, the collective member churches of the Galatians 6:10 Project will offer temporary emergency shelter at the hub church of Church of the Apostles to our members who have no other means of meeting their basic needs. Our goal is to offer heat, hot water, food, showers, and sleep during this time of crisis.
What will Galatians 6:10 look like at my church?
Before a mass emergency happens, the Galatians 6:10 volunteers will provide you with an educational pamphlet, "Get Ready Now," produced by FEMA, to help you best prepare for such an event. Make a Kit, Make a Plan, and Be Informed are the three key elements to being prepared.
During a mass emergency, a team of volunteer emergency responders will contact each of our elderly church members to check on their safety and well being. We will rely on our younger church members to initiate their call for assistance. If your safety is in jeopardy (young and old), we will encourage you to make arrangements to stay with a loved one. If that is not possible, we will encourage you to come to Church of the Apostles, where you will have access to food and shelter. If you cannot transport yourself there, we will atempt to provide transportation. If you find it necessary to come to Church of the Apostles, you will need to bring important items, such as your medications, medical equipment, personal hygiene items, towel, and blanket and pillow, if necessary.
If anyone knows that he/she is in need of assistance during a time of mass emergency, please call your church, as this will aid the emergency responders. You may need to leave a message.
